Brendan Fraser, 31, didn’t always feel that he belonged. “I was an outsider,” he said. “My family moved every two or three years, and I was always the new kid. I had no real consistency in my life. In my deepest soul, I longed to be part of a community, to have a place to go.”
In 1991, Fraser had a one-line role in his first movie, Dogfight. He has since appeared in 20 more films, most notably the hit children’s comedy George of the Jungle (1997) and Gods and Monsters (1998), a role that won Fraser critical praise. Last year, he starred in the box-office hit The Mummy. His next movie, Bedazzled, is scheduled to be released in September. In less than a decade, Fraser has emerged as one of the most bankable movie stars in the world.
“I wanted to find a way to belong,” Fraser continued, “but I didn’t know how. I wanted it so badly. That was my dream.”
I visited Brendan Fraser in Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife, Afton Smith, 32, a former actress. With all his success, I wanted to know if he had made his dream a reality. I started by asking about his family.
